Microwave Ovens Microwave ovens come in a variety of models, styles, and sizes depending on your needs. You can find them for as little as $30 and up to several hundred. Microwave ovens work by producing electromagnetic radiation, which can travel trough glass, plastic, and ceramic containers to heat food quickly. |

The radiation is turned to heat as it is absorbed into the food. The radiation can not got through metal, which is why you can not use metal dished in the microwave. Microwave ovens come in standard and convection models or a combination of both. You can also get them to go on your countertop, built into the cabinetry, or over the range. Over the range microwave ovens typically come with a light and ventilation fan to go over your stovetop. The built in microwave ovens can be installed under a cabinet or in with the cabinets. You can get molding to install around the microwave so it matches your cabinets. Microwave ovens typically come in black, white or stainless steel. Microwave ovens also come in a wide variety of sizes and wattage outputs depending on your needs. There are four basic sizes of microwave ovens available: 1. Large-capacity: These are designed to cook whole meals. You can put a full size casserole dish in them, as well as larger food items such as a turkey or roast. These are normally run on over 2000 watts, and have over a 2.1 cubic foot capacity. 2. Medium-capacity: These run on 1000 - 15000 watts, and are usually between 1.1 and 1.6 cubic feet. These are known as the family-sized microwaves because they are ideal to use in homes with multiple people. These microwave ovens generally come with several “auto-cook” options and features. 3. Compact: compact microwave ovens are small and portable. They are ideal for offices, efficiencies, or dorm rooms. They run on 500 - 1000 watts, so they generally take a little longer to cook things. They are less than 1 cubic foot in capacity. They are great for light cooking, warning things up or defrosting, and they generally cost $50 or less. 4. Mini-Microwave ovens: These are fairly new and still being developed. They run on about 300 watts, which means they don’t have enough power to heat a lot. They are designed only to heat food, not cook it from raw. There are models, which come with DC power plugs, so they can be plugged into a car. This would make them great for travel. Manufacturers are working on making mini-microwave ovens, which can be plugged into a USB port on a computer. This would allow you to have a microwave oven right at your work desk. If you are looking at microwave ovens to use at home, you should look at ones with inverter technology. Inverter technology provides continues power, which means there is a constant energy flow. The energy flow than varies in intensity based on the meal selection. The continuous power means a faster cooking time.
